Q1) I don’t understand what it means when it says we are created in the image of God.
A1) This is a great question. I believe we are created in Gods image in the following ways
1) We physically look like him. John chapter 1 says that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and was God, and all things were created through the Word, and then the Word became flesh. So Jesus was with God, and was God, and created all things. Therefore Jesus existed before creation, and created humans to look like him physically. We probably don’t look so alike him that we could pick him out of a line up, but we look more like him physically then any other known creature.
2) We look like him emotionally. We know God gets jealous, angry, pleased, happy, that he laughs, and has the whole range of emotions. As do we, however it is not uncommon for us to get sinful when we get angry, or jealous, or most of the other emotions. But we get all of these because we, like our creator, have feelings and were designed to.
3) We look like him in the fact that we are designed for relationship. The trinity is an example of a perfect relationship between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God desired even more relationship, so he created man so that he could pour his love on to Man, fellowship with Man, and have that love relationship as Man would allow. As his creations, we also desire relationship, and we are like starving animals when we don’t have it. We are designed for relationship. Relationship with spouses, friends, family, we even have relationship with animals like pets which is consistent with the first command from God to Man in Genesis that we should be a steward of the animal kingdom.
